5 Ayurvedic Natural Home Remedies To Treat Cough.

Coughing is body's way of responding when something irritates the throat or airways. This irritant stimulates nerves which send a message to the brain. The brain responds to the stimulant and instructs the muscles in the chest and abdomen to push air out the lungs to force out the irritant.

Yet, coughing can be an irritating and persistent problem. This is why, Ayurveda offers a variety of natural remedies to soothe, give instant relief and heal. These remedies are made from natural  ingredients and can provide relief without the side effects, unlike over-the-counter medications.

Here are top five effective Ayurvedic home remedies you can use to control or get rid of cough:

  1. Honey and Ginger Treatment

Ingredients Needed:

1 teaspoon of fresh ginger juice

1 teaspoon of honey

Preparation Method:

Ginger is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, while honey soothes the throat and acts as a natural cough suppressant.

Extract juice from fresh ginger by grating it and pressing the pulp through a sieve. Mix the ginger juice with honey. Consume this mixture two to three times a day for relief from cough.

  1. Turmeric Milk Treatment

Ingredients Needed:

1 teaspoon of turmeric powder

1 cup of milk

A pinch of black pepper (optional)

Preparation Method:

Turmeric milk, also known as golden milk, is an amazing remedy for cough. Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help in soothing the throat and reducing cough.

Warm the milk in a small pot. Add the turmeric powder and stir well. For enhanced absorption, add a pinch of black pepper. And drink this mixture warm before bedtime.

  1. Tulsi (Holy Basil) Tea Treatment

Boil the water in a pan. Add tulsi leaves and let it simmer for 10 minutes. Strain the tea and add honey if desired. Drink this tea two to three times a day to get good relief.

  1. Licorice Root (Mulethi) Tea Treatment

Ingredients Needed:

1 teaspoon of dried licorice root powder

1 cup of water

Preparation Method:

Licorice root acts as an expectorant (mucoactive agent) and soothes the throat, making it an excellent remedy for cough.

Boil the water in a pot. Add licorice root powder and simmer for 5-10 minutes. Strain and drink the tea warm. Drink this tea twice daily for best results.

  1. Cinnamon and Clove Infusion Treatment

Ingredients Needed:

1 stick of cinnamon

2-3 cloves

2 cups of water

1 teaspoon of honey (optional)

Preparation Method:

Both cinnamon and cloves have antimicrobial properties and help in reducing throat irritation.

Boil the water in a pot. Add the cinnamon stick and cloves and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes. Strain the infusion and add honey if needed. Drink this warm infusion twice daily.

Besides all these remedies, experts believe that cough can be prevented or controlled by:

  • Staying Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, herbal teas, and soup to keep your throat moist and help thin mucus.
  • Avoiding Irritants: Stay clear of smoke, dust, and other irritants that can aggravate coughing.
  • Taking adequate rest: Ensure you get adequate rest to help your body heal faster.

All these natural remedies provide relief and promote overall health. Yet, it always recommended to consult an Ayurvedic doctor if your cough persists.
